November was chock-full of exploration and learning. In English Language Arts we wrapped up our ABC museum and presented to PreK. The kids did an exceptional job overcoming shyness to teach about their letters to Ms. De Jong's PreK class. We also crafted and wrote about our own trains based on the terrific story, How to Train a Train by Jason Carter Eaton. In Math we focused on comparing quantities and sizes of objects. The concept of "How many more?" might be the most difficult math concept we tackle all year, and we will tackle it again in the second semester. One way we explored this concept was in the garden. While half the class planted vegetables, the other half was counting and comparing the number of lettuce and radish seedlings.
In addition to our Language Arts and Math curriculum, we learned all about where our food comes from when the Sustainable Food Center visited our campus. Students got to taste several kinds of raw vegetables as well as plant swiss chard. This was our kick-off for our gardening service project. We will eventually donate a lot of our garden's produce to a local soup kitchen.
Last but not least, we celebrated Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving! We had a whole-school assembly on Veteran's Day to learn about what veterans are and why they are important. We also helped make a giant American flag out of hand prints. We celebrated Thanksgiving the Friday before break. Rather than switching for Language Arts and Math, we stayed in our room and learned in Spanish in the morning and English in the afternoon. We acted out the Thanksgiving story, read Stone Soup and even made our own Stone Soup in the slow-cooker. In the afternoon we played the math game "Hunt the Turkey" and tried our soup.
